Pharmaceutical companies must contend with challenges from supply chain lapses (theft, diversion, S.O.P. deviations, product recalls, reverse logistics etc.) counterfeiting and stringent regulations. These challenges get compounded when dealing across the states and country business operations, besides that not only impact tangible profits but also the intangible brand credibility. In this context, there is also a credible increase in public awareness about the genuineness of medicine (in particular medicine that require cold chain) and their predictability of clinical outcomes.
Providing visibility and full traceability becomes a paramount importance to both the Industry and the Govt. – A fool proof solution not only brings transparency in the system, but can also be a key differentiator, and undoubtedly can create immense opportunities for a competitive advantage.
COVID-19 has accelerated the shift in how pharma was engaging with HCPs, professional organisations and even patients in India from a sales to more of a scientific, unbiased and balanced marketing communications. As one of the business leader from a prominent MNC said, “For the first time we are seeing a certain shift in HCP’s preference for scientific communication for innovators companies. MSLs and scientific operation teams will be playing a key role in the near future.”
Catalyzed by the pandemic, the pharma industry quickly progressed from being digitally agnostic to a state of preparedness.
The shift required the industry to experiment with technology in its customer-facing plans, which resulted in many cases the creation of random acts of digital, often without a cohesive overarching strategy.
Can pharma do better? The answer lies in understanding the utility of their digital assets while building a mindset to transform, and ensuring that teams within the organization do not work at cross-purposes.
With the Second Wave hitting India, customers (patients and physicians) will continue to socially distance themselves in the foreseeable future. Pharma must use the field force for reach and relationship and digital for frequency and personalised content for better customer experience.
The pandemic has made doctors adopt Telehealth in a substantial way to shore up their revenues and this will continue to be one of their channels to engage patients. Telehealth along with EMR/EHR, digital therapeutics and wearables is enabling doctors to better care for their patients. There are many ways in which pharma can support the digital evolution of doctors.
Lower prices, discounts, convenience of ordering and home delivery are some of the benefits for consumers with e-pharmacies. The anonymity of the internet encourages patients to seek information about medicines that they would otherwise avoid. Mental health is one area where the consumers wish to maintain confidentiality and opt for online consultation and medication.
